Cricket World Cup team of the tournament: Four England players named in ICC XI

Four England players have been named in the ICC’s Cricket World Cup team of the tournament, after Eoin Morgan’s side secured their maiden triumph.

International rookie Jofra Archer, final man of the match Ben Stokes and Test captain Joe Root are included, along with opener Jason Roy, who makes the side despite missing three matches with a hamstring injury.

Archer took 20 wickets and bowled the crucial super over in the final, while Joe Root finished as the top English run scorer on 556.

Stokes’ brilliant 84 not out, which rescued England’s chase in Sunday’s epic final at Lord’s, was his fifth score of 79 or more. Roy scored 443 runs at a strike rate of more than 115, and his return from injury led to a transformation in England’s form.

India’s Rohit Sharma, top scorer at the tournament having become the first man to score five centuries in a single World Cup, partners Roy at the top of the order, with New Zealand’s outstanding captain Kane Williamson, named player of the tournament, at three.

Root is at four, with Shakib Al Hasan, who excelled with 606 runs for Bangladesh, selected at five as the only player to make the team having not reached the knockout stages.

Stokes is the all-rounder at six, with Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey at seven after a breakthrough campaign.

Fellow Aussie Mitchell Starc, who led the wicket standings with 27, joins Archer in the bowling attack, along with India’s Jasprit Bumrah (18) and New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson (21).
