The future of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United reportedly appears more fragile than ever after a stunning turn of events at the club’s training complex.

The Portuguese superstar is pushing to leave Old Trafford this summer, less than a year after his high-profile return. United’s failure to secure Champions League qualification, together with a perceived lack of direction, is behind the 37-year-old’s thinking. But finding a new suitor for the veteran star is proving far harder than expected.

Indeed, a number of big-name clubs have quickly distanced themselves from a potential deal. To that end, the likes of PSG, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are all saying no to his signing.

A possible route to Italy has also been closed with Inter, AC Milan and Roma all dismissing claims he could sign. And only on Thursday, trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano also ruled Marseille out of the equation, explaining why their president was angry at the links.

Publicly, United’s stance very much remains that they want Ronaldo to stay. Losing his goals from their side will leave a big gap to fill. To that end, the signing of a new central striker is not in their plans this summer.

Behind the scenes, however, it seems it is a very different story.

United boss Erik Ten Hag is reportedly growing tired of Ronaldo’s ways and ongoing push to leave.

And with the situation reaching boiling point, Ten Hag reportedly let Ronaldo know his feelings in what’s been described as a brual team meeting.

Per The Sun, Ten Hag did not bite his lip as he let rip towards Ronaldo in front of a shocked Manchester United squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo brutally axed by Ten Hag

In what has been described as a ‘ruthless’ two-hour showdown last Thursday, the United boss told Ronaldo and captain Harry Maguire that neither would be starting against Liverpool.

In what was intended as a ‘clear-the-air’ session, Ten Hag told his players a few home truths after a slow start to the season. At the time, United had lost their opening two fixtures against Brighton and Brentford. And in an effort to garner a response, a team meeting was held ahead of the Liverpool fixture.

While Ronaldo did not speak, a number of other players did have their say. To that end, the manager and a number of his under-performing players all laid everything on the line.

And the chat seemed to have the desired effect as a much-improved performance saw – in Roy Keane’s words – make Liverpool look average, in a deserved 2-1 win.

However, Ronaldo was left with more question marks hanging over his head following the meeting. Per The Sun, Ten Hag is ‘sick of the circus’ around him that ‘threatens to undermine his rebuilding job’.

The paper claims Ten Hag now just wants Ronaldo out. Furthermore, a number of senior players also now reportedly want him gone. The report claims they feel Ronaldo’s attitude around the squad is affecting spirits in the camp.

And in a final show of strength towards Ronaldo, Ten Hag told his players it was his way or the highway.

And if they did not like it, they were told they would be made available for transfer with immediate effect. Given Ronaldo’s desire to leave, Ten Hag will not stand in his way.

Ten Hag insists he wants his players all on the same page as they look for rapid improvements.

Ten Hag right to lay down the law

The tough stance that Ten Hag has taken with his players is exactly what is required right now. That is probably moreso the case as far as Cristiano Ronaldo is concerned.

While the days of managers intimidating players has gone – and maybe Sir Alex Ferguson was the last of his kind in that regard – United’s big-name stars clearly need a few home truths.

Defeats at home to Brighton and the spanking at Brentford are simply unacceptable for United. And that sorry start also threatens to undermine Ten Hag’s reputation as one of the game’s great coaches too.

Clearly, the team meeting had the desired affect. Few will have fancied them to beat Liverpool on the evidence of the first two games. But a spirited and determined United gave Liverpool no room to breathe and seized the initiatibe at Old Trafford.

They moved into a deserved 2-0 lead, before a late Mohamed Salah goal gave Liverpool hope. However, an equaliser would have been harsh on United, who pulled off a deserving first victory of the season.

Scott McTominay, meanwhile, is another player whose future at the club appears in some doubt. And amid links to Newcastle, a report claims Ten Hag has come to a decision on the Scotland international’s future.
