Cristiano Ronaldo could be offered the captaincy at Manchester United after reportedly turning down the chance to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

Beckham, like a couple of other clubs, has explored the possibility of getting Ronaldo to MLS. But United have been steadfast in their stance that Ronaldo is not for sale.

Beckham, whose Miami side are managed by Phil Neville, was looking to boost the club with the arrival of Ronaldo. But the 37-year-old will report for pre-season training at Carrington on Monday and he is expected to exercise the option in his contract to extend it until 2024.

The Daily Star also claim new boss Erik ten Hag could decide to hand Ronaldo the captaincy.

Ten Hag is expected to speak to Ronaldo in a bid to persuade him his immediate future lies at Old Trafford. And as a sweetener Ten Hag may decide to strip Harry Maguire of the captain’s armband and hand it to the veteran.

Maguire has skippered Manchester United since the departure of Ashley Young. However, his performances came under the microscope last season and he was heavily criticised.

Ten Hag could opt to relieve Maguire of the pressure role and Ronaldo may benefit.

The report also claims that Ten Hag will look to ease Ronaldo’s concerns over the club’s lack of transfer activity.

Ten Hag has yet to add to his squad and has had to deal with uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo this weekend.

Chelsea had eyes on Ronaldo

Chelsea’s PR machine has been working overtime this weekend. New owner Todd Boehly has made sure that his talks with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes hit the media.

According to The Athletic, in a report by David Ornstein and Dan Sheldon, the idea of Chelsea targeting Ronaldo has been discussed with Mendes.

American businessman Boehly is understood to have met with Mendes in Portugal recently. And the prospect of Ronaldo joining Chelsea was on the agenda.

United though, via The Mirror, have categorically said that the 37-year-old he is not for sale.

The forward scored 24 goals last season, but he was unable to lead the club to a top-four finish.

There were suggestions at the end of the season that Ronaldo would move on. But Ten Hag wants to keep the Portugal star. And he will meet face to face with the former Juventus star this week.
