Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United: Jurgen Klopp sends transfer warning to Liverpool’s rivals

Jurgen Klopp claims signing players like Cristiano Ronaldo is “not a business of the future” as Manchester United close in on a sensational deal for their former star forward.

Ronaldo has been linked with a move to Manchester City in recent days, but on Friday multiple reports in both the Italian and British media suggested that United had moved ahead of their rivals for the Portuguese legend’s signature.

United have in recent transfer windows sought to target young British players to form the spine of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team after being stung by big-money flops of late, but it appears that re-signing Ronaldo - who will be 37 next February - is a chance the club has decided they cannot pass up.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has welcomed the potential return of Ronaldo to the Premier League, though Liverpool manager Klopp believes it is not a prudent business model for the future.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea on Saturday, Klopp said: “I watched that (the Ronaldo transfer) like a football supporter and it is not about me to judge that.

“If other clubs can do this, it is not a business of the future. It is for now and immediately.

“That is how some clubs are working and that is fine. There must be different ways, a team - two or three years later and you need success... you need to make sure you develop as a team and club, and that is what we did.”
