Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane have added “something extra” to Manchester United as they prepare to kick off their Champions League campaign tonight.

Manchester United are in Switzerland to take on Young Boys in Group F, which also includes Atalanta and Villarreal.

Solskjaer’s side were beaten by Villarreal in the Europa League Final last season, but he believes summer signings Ronaldo and Varane will make a difference as he searches for his first trophy as Manchester United boss.

“We’re getting a spine in the team with experience and quality,” said Solskjaer.

“Of course, with Raphael and Cristiano, they add… not the last bit of course because you can never say it’s your last bit but it added something extra you have to buy, unless you win it four times yourself.

“I think everyone who signs for Manchester United wants to win trophies.”
