Erik ten Hag’s patience with Cristiano Ronaldo has finally snapped after the Manchester United boss “shifted his stance” on the striker’s request to leave Old Trafford.
Ronaldo’s desire to leave United was made clear at the start of the summer. Ten Hag though has always maintained that the 37-year-old was part of his plans. So much so that the Portugal star has been involved in both of United’s Premier league games despite missing the pre-season tour to Asia and Australia.
In fact Ronaldo started the 4-0 defeat at Brentford, but his performance left much to be desired. And that may well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back because The Times now report that Ten Hag now wants Ronaldo sold.
The Dutchman “is open to selling “the Portugal international this month. The report claims that Ten Hag was “unhappy” with Ronaldo’s “behaviour around the squad and motivation to see the club succeed this season”.
As per the source, United continue to insist that Ronaldo is not for sale. But Ten Hag will be pushing United officials to get a deal done to see the striker leave Manchester.
Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been working all summer to try and seal a transfer. The former Juventus man is looking to continue his love affair with the Champions League. But Chelsea and Bayern Munich have turned down the player, as well as AC Milan.
The United icon is also said to have “reasons” for moving his family from Manchester.
One potential escape route would be a controversial switch to Atletico Madrid.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone is said to be keen on a deal after agreeing a similar deal for Luis Suarez two years ago.
Ronaldo escape route
Journalist Guillem Balague report says that Ronaldo is open to the idea of making the switch to the Wanda Metropolitano. But there are hurdles to overcome, including severe animosity from fans after Ronaldo’s connection to Real Madrid.
In June, Atleti president Enrique Cerezo said signing Ronaldo would be “practically impossible.”
But the LaLiga club have a good relationship with Mendes. And they are said to be open to using Alvaro Morata or Antoine Griezmann to facilitate a deal.
A deal though will not be easy to conclude with just two weeks of the window remaining. And United’s position is further complicated by the fact that they were already looking to add a striker before deciding to axe Ronaldo.
United are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a move for Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha. The 23-year-old will command a fee in the region of €50m, as per talkSPORT.
The Times though claim that Ronaldo would not be part of any deal for Cunha.
