Cristiano Ronaldo has travelled back to England for crunch talks with Manchester United over his future, with sources teasing a potential outcome.

The Portugal star has been in Lisbon, citing family reasons for his absence from the club’s pre-season tour. Indeed, amid Ronaldo’s absence, United’s other players have settled in with their new manager.

Erik ten Hag has got an immediate response from players such as Anthony Martial.

However, Ronaldo continues to dominate a large part of Man Utd‘s pre-season rhetoric.

He wants to leave the club and find Champions League football elsewhere following United’s sixth-placed Premier League finish and subsequent Europa League qualification.

The Red Devils, though, have continued to insist that the player is not for sale.

According to The Athletic, the situation will develop in the ‘coming days’ when Ronaldo has talks with Ten Hag.

Ten Hag has publicly insisted that the striker will form an important part of United’s 2022/23 plans. And their not-for-sale stance has been hardened by Atletico Madrid – one of few likely suitors – laughing off the idea of signing him.

Atletico have deemed a Ronaldo transfer financially unfeasible and look unlikely to change their stance.

As such, The Athletic claims United sources believe the 37-year-old looks ‘increasingly likely’ to stay at Old Trafford.

They also feel his desire to return is a ‘positive sign’ ahead of the talks with Ten Hag.

Ronaldo top-scored for Man Utd last season with 24 goals in 38 games. Without him, they may well have finished lower than sixth. Premier League hat-tricks against Norwich and Tottenham won the club six points alone.

But there is debate as to whether Ten Hag – who wants to stamp his mark on his new club with fresh faces – should stick with an unhappy player who does not represent the long-term future at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, Man Utd hope for breakthrough

The next few days, then, look crucial for Ronaldo, Man Utd and Ten Hag.

All three parties will have their reasons for what they want to happen – be it stay or go.

Ronaldo has another year left on his initial two-year contract – with a one-year extension available too.

With Atletico pulling out of the running, a United exit now looks unlikely. However, him moving back to Old Trafford last summer was not on the cards at all until the end of August.
