Bjoergen, who won triple gold at the Winter Olympics last month, took victory in the 30km classic mass start in a time of 1:20:55.7 hours with Johaug nearly two minutes adrift in second.
The win was not only Bjoergen's fourth in Holmenkollen, having been victorious in 2005, 2010 and 2012 previously, but the 66th of her career in the World Cup and the 100th time she has been among the top three.
Bjoergen's fourth win was so comprehensive that she collected all the bonus points on offer with those 60 in addition to the 100 for the win trimming Johaug's overall World Cup lead to 39 ahead of the finals weekend in Falun.
However Bjoergen, whose previous overall World Cup titles have come in 2005, 2006 and 2012, doesn't expect fellow Norwegian Johaug to give up her lead without a fight.
"I felt great and both pairs of my skis were great. Up to Frogneseteren I noticed Therese was not close behind and I decided to go hard," she said.
"I knew I had to ski in front to be fighting for bonus points. If I am to win the overall World Cup I have to be good and faster than Therese next three competitions."
