Manchester United have found out whether they will be able to sign Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias amid a big update on his future.

Iglesias was in great form last season, finding the back of the net 19 times in 51 matches across all competitions. His goals helped Betis win the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2004-05, while also finishing fifth in La Liga and reaching the Europa League round of 16.

Iglesias got off to a great start in the current campaign too, scoring in Betis’ first three La Liga matches. Overall, his record this season stands at nine goals in 23 appearances.

The Spaniard’s contract at the Benito Villamarin Stadium runs until June 2026. Despite this, he was recently linked with a transfer away from Spain.

On January 25, Estadio Deportivo claimed Man Utd to be looking at signing Iglesias to improve their striker options. Of course, the Red Devils have brought in Wout Weghorst already this month, though they have regularly been linked with a move for another goalscorer.

Man Utd were named as potential suitors for Iglesias after Atletico Madrid cooled their interest in him. Betis apparently set his price tag at €40million (£35.3m), which should fall within Man Utd’s budget.

Estadio Deportivo also claimed that if Man Utd could not get a deal agreed in January, then a summer move would also be an option.

That same source has now provided an update on the situation. They claim to have been in contact with the 30-year-old’s representatives, as well as officials at Betis.

Man Utd-linked star to remain in La Liga for now

It is stated that he will be remaining with Betis past the January transfer deadline. The Seville-based team would also like to keep Iglesias past the summer, though this stance may change if Erik ten Hag’s side put up enough money.

As such, Man Utd will likely keep tabs on his situation over the coming months before potentially getting in contact with Betis at a later date.

Iglesias is one of the most reliable goalscorers in Spain. Despite this, there is a big reason why Ten Hag may go for a Serie A star instead.

As the one-time Spain international is 30, he does not represent a long-term striker solution. Ten Hag is keen to find players who can help Man Utd in the long run, and this could rule Iglesias out.

Instead, it would be beneficial if Man Utd went after Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. He is enjoying a great season, having scored 15 times in just 20 games so far.

Osimhen is extremely important to the Napoli setup. He is helping them to lead Serie A, and they could win the title for the first time since 1989-90.

However, the 24-year-old may be allowed to leave come the summer, according to Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio. Napoli have set his price tag at an astonishing €150m (£132m), which means Ten Hag will have to break Man Utd’s transfer record to land him.

Meanwhile, Man Utd have emphatically closed the door on a defender’s last-minute exit, forcing a club to target a West Ham alternative.
