Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been named England Under-21s captain, manager Lee Carsley has confirmed.

The 21-year-old, who joined Palace from Chelsea for a fee of £18million over the summer, will wear the armband throughout the Young Lions' qualifying campaign for the 2023 European Championship.

“Mark will lead the squad for the whole campaign,” said Carsley.

“He is a player I’ve know for two or three years and straight away I was impressed with how mature he is, the way he talks about the game and influences the players off the pitch.

“The example he sets off the pitch as well as on it made it an easy choice.

"We have a lot of leaders in the team and in terms of the way he handled play in the Championship for Swansea and now at Crystal Palace, he is a player who was ready for the responsibility."

England U21s failed to make it out of the group at Euro 2021 earlier this year but begin their qualifying campaign for the 2023 tournament against Kosovo on Tuesday night.
