Crystal Palace search for prolific striker to match Jamie Vardy and Danny Ings' goalscoring exploits

Roy Hodgson is keen to bring a proven striker to Crystal Palace this summer, a player who can emulate the likes of Jamie Vardy and Danny Ings.

Only bottom club Norwich City (25) have scored fewer top-flight goals than the Eagles' 28 so far this season, with Christian Benteke struggling for form once more and top scorer Jordan Ayew unable to pose the same threat when playing centrally.

Palace have been clear for some time as to what they are looking for in the next transfer window, with a focus on younger players and a forward who can be relied upon to take chances when they arise.

The Eagles did add Cenk Tosun to their squad in January, only for the Turkish striker to suffer an ACL injury and return to Everton after only five appearances and one goal.

Vardy, the Premier League's current top scorer with 21 strikes to his name, has fired Leicester into the Champions League places while Danny Ings, with 18, has bagged almost half of Southampton's goals this season.

"My simple answer is we’d look for a good one and one with a proven goalscoring record, that would be rather nice," Hodgson said when asked what sort of forward he wants to add ahead of next season.

"Because if you look at the teams doing rather well this year, outside of course of the Citys and Uniteds who have quite an array of riches, you see Leicester and what Vardy does with the goals and how he has helped them along the way, and you look at Southampton with Danny Ings in particular.

"You are talking about two guys that everybody knows not only are they good players but when they are in your team there are going to be some goals.

"We’re aware of that. I’m not prepared at the moment to talk about specific profiles, we discuss that internally.

"So I can only give you the simple answer that we are looking for good strikers and ones who know where the goal is, because we don’t believe that we don’t create chances or don’t have enough possession of the ball in opposing team’s half, it’s just this year we haven’t taken as many of the chances we have created that I or the team would like."
