Crystal Palace have announced that they have signed Chris Richards on a permanent deal from German giants Bayern Munich.

The 22-year-old joined Bayern in 2018 from FC Dallas. He has recently had a spell on loan at Hoffenheim. According to BBC Sport, he has joined Palace for an initial £8.5m, though this could rise to £11m with add-ons.

Richards told the Palace website: “I grew up watching the Premier League and grew up of course watching (Wilfried) Zaha, so it’ll be cool to spend some time on the field with them (the players) and be a part of this historic club.

“I’m really excited for it. The kind of project I’ve seen (attracted me).

“It’s a lot of young players but also young players who have a lot of fight.

“Palace is a club that seems like they’re always fighting.”

Eagles chairman Steve Parish said: “Chris is a hugely talented young player, and he brings a lot of experience at a high level for his age, as well being an established international for the USA national side.

“I had the great pleasure of spending some time with him and his family yesterday and I know he will be a great fit for the club and I’m sure will become a firm fans’ favourite.

“Competition can only drive him and our squad on.”

Richards is Palace’s fourth summer signing. They have already paid around £20m to sign Mali star Cheick Doucoure.

The Eagles have also brought in Sam Johnstone and Malcolm Ebiowei on free transfers from West Brom and Derby County.

Speaking earlier this month, Patrick Vieira insisted that “developing young layers is part of the DNA” of Crystal Palace:

“At Palace you had a couple of young players who came through and made a good career for themselves in the Premier League.

“We were successful on that side last year because we identify some young players and create a platform for them to express themselves. I believe this year it will be even more difficult, because we raise the level of demand on the players.

“Of course, having those players with us on tour will tell us whether they will be ready to take some part this season. If not, we will need to be ready to give them the game programme they need to play week after week and keep improving themselves.”
