Crystal Palace are likely to avoid FA sanctions for the banner unveiled by a group of fans during Saturday’s match with Newcastle, which criticised the Magpies’ new Saudi Arabian owners.

The banner, which also took aim at the Premier League’s ownership test, featured illustrations of a man dressed in traditional Arabic clothing alongside a depiction of chief executive Richard Masters.

The Metropolitan Police duly launched an investigation into the matter, but confirmed on Monday that no charges would be filed.

A statement by Croydon MPS read: “On Saturday, a member of the public contacted us to raise concerns about a banner displayed at the Crystal Palace vs Newcastle match at Selhurst Park.

“Following an assessment, officers have concluded that no offences have been committed. No further action will be taken.”

It is now understood that Palace are also likely to avoid sanctions from the FA for failing to control their supporters, though a final decision not to punish the club will not be linked to the prior police investigation.

Palace fan group Holmesdale Fanatics defended the banner on Twitter and said: “The Premier League has made a mockery of its own ‘Owners and Directors’ test.”
