Cumbrian goalkeeper Dean Henderson has today completed a loan move from Manchester United to Nottingham Forest.

The move to the newly-promoted Premier League club has been in the pipeline for some time.

And now the Whitehaven star has sealed his switch to the City Ground.

It offers Henderson, 25, the prospect of first-team football after a 2021/22 season as second choice at Old Trafford.

The former Carlisle United academy player has spoken of his joy and excitement at sealing the season-long move.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining such a fantastic club with an amazing set of fans and a wonderful history," Henderson said.

“I want to thank the manager and owners at Nottingham Forest for the great opportunity to play for this club in their first season back in the Premier League.

"I’m really excited to work with everyone at the club from the manager, players and goalkeeper coach Danny Alcock.

“Finally, just a massive thank you to the fans for the welcome I have received and I can’t wait to celebrate some brilliant moments together this coming season."

Henderson was limited to three first-team appearances last season having been held up by Covid at the start of the campaign, as David de Gea returned to the team.

He had been linked with Newcastle United, but now joins Steve Cooper's side, who were promoted via the Championship play-offs last season.

Henderson will also hope to reignite his England career and eventually add to his one cap to date.

Forest head coach Cooper, speaking on Forest's website, said of the Cumbrian: "Dean is a top-class goalkeeper and he’s hungry for more opportunities to play and to continue to prove himself at the highest level.

"He’s played multiple times in the Premier League but has also experienced the Champions League and international football.

“Again, Dean is someone who has attracted a lot of interest from other clubs and we’re delighted that he has chosen to Nottingham Forest for our return to the Premier League."

Henderson's loan move means Carlisle United will not reap any financial benefits from their former youth player this summer.

A sell-on clause could have boosted the Blues in the event of a big-money move.

But United chief executive Nigel Clibbens this week confirmed that Carlisle would not receive any proceeds from Henderson playing on loan in the Premier League.

Forest say Henderson, meanwhile, joins up with their squad with immediate effect and is part of their pre-season training camp in Spain.

He will target a Premier League debut for the club in their season opener against Newcastle on August 6.

It is the fifth loan club of Henderson's Man Utd career, the Cumbrian having previously played for Stockport County, Grimsby Town, Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield United.
