Notts County manager Keith Curle praised striker Jonathan Forte after he scored a hat-trick to help his side to a 4-2 victory over Charlton at The Valley.

Alan Judge scored the other as the away side hit four first-half goals before Bradley Wright-Phillips and Scott Wagstaff scored after the break for the Addicks.

"That's Jonathan Forte at his best," said Curle. "We try to give him freedom to express himself and are not too critical about some of his movements because he's a natural instinctive player. He goes where he thinks he'll cause problems. He's got pace, power, a willingness to work, a willingness to learn and a desire to score goals."

He added: "We sent Chris Kiwomya (development squad manager) to watch Charlton in their last game and he came back glowing thinking we can cause them problems if we can get the ball down and play.

"It's a great stadium and it's tough when the fans are behind the team. We knew we had to quieten the crowd and make it into a game where our strengths could expose some of their weaknesses.

"Charlton are going to get promoted as champions they just need to get over the line. They will do. They are a good team, with great players, good balance and a good manager."

Charlton boss Chris Powell said it was the worst performance he had seen from his side since taking over as manager 15 months ago.

The defeat came just five days after the Addicks lost their unbeaten home record in the league to Colchester United.

"That will live long in my memory as manager of this football club because it's something that's very rare and when you're on the receiving end of it it's not a good feeling," he said.

"For a team that's prided itself on its defensive record and not conceding goals that was - as an understatement - pretty poor."
