The current top-selling NFL jersey? It's not a player you'd expect

The NFL Players Association has released the list of the players with the most popular merchandise for the most recent sales quarter, from March 1 through May 31, and while there are some names you’d always expect to see, the No. 1 player is certainly a surprise.

Fly Eagles Fly

The hottest-selling player merchandise is…drumroll please…Nick Foles. No, really!

It’s the first time Foles has ever been atop the top sellers list.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, who stepped in last season when teammate Carson Wentz, left, suffered a torn ACL, was the most popular NFL player in terms of merchandise sales for the first quarter of this year. (AP)

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, who stepped in after teammate Carson Wentz tore his ACL late last season and led the Eagles to their first-ever Super Bowl title, takes the crown over New England’s Tom Brady.

Wentz was in third place.

The list takes in account sales of a range of products, from jerseys to Fatheads to even cake decorations; the NFLPA has licensed over 70 companies to use player names and likenesses on products.

Unlikely hero

While seeing Foles’ name atop the sales list is a surprise, maybe it shouldn’t be. Even though it’s highly likely Wentz will step back into his starting job when training camp begins if he’s healthy, rabid Eagles fans have likely been snapping up Foles merchandise to honor the soft-spoken 29-year-old for leading them to the Promised Land.

Foles, the Super Bowl MVP, has been open about wanting to see Wentz go on to have a great career, even at the expense of his own playing time.

One rookie makes top-10 list

After Foles, Brady and Wentz on the list: New York Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley, the only rookie in this quarter’s top-10.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is at No. 5, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers at No. 6, and Prescott’s teammate, Ezekiel Elliott, at No. 7. San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Raiders quarterback Derek Carr round out the top 10.

In addition to Barkley, there were four other rookies in the top 50: Jets’ quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 20, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield at No. 30, Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen at No. 38 and Seahawks’ linebacker Shaquem Griffin at No. 43.
