Borussia Dortmund winger Thorgan Hazard is the latest player to be linked with a summer switch to ambitious Newcastle United.

The Magpies now have funds to compete for big-name stars in the transfer market. And manager Eddie Howe brought in several new faces in January to aid their survival bid. It certainly worked as the Tynesiders finished 11th in the Premier League standings.

With backing from their Saudi owners, the north-east outfit are now expected to add a few stars this summer. They have already turned Matt Targett’s loan move from Aston Villa into a permanent fixture.

But Howe has yet to bring in a fresh face to St James’ Park. That is despite the media linking Newcastle with a host of players.

The latest is Hazard, who has been with the Bundesliga club for three seasons. The Belgium international enjoyed 28 top-flight starts during his first season with BVB.

But injury thwarted his progress in 2020-2021, with only eight starts among 16 outings. However, he was overlooked by manager Edin Terzic on many occasions last term.

The younger brother of Real Madrid star Eden started just 14 league games, scoring four goals. He has not set the footballing world on fire but German daily Bild suggest Newcastle are interested.

And it is thought they would need to part with only €15m to get a deal over the line.

Hazard an unlikely target

Howe has made it clear that he will not waste the club’s new-found wealth and will be prudent in the market.

It is thought the former Bournemouth chief wants to being defender Sven Botman and striker Hugo Ekitike to the club. But they have yet to complete a deal for either player.

Many more big-name stars have been mentioned in connection with the club and the link to Hazard has flown under the radar. He is not in the top bracket of European stars but does have 45 caps and nine goals for Belgium.

The midfielder played 182 times in all competitions for Borussia Monchengladbach before moving to Dortmund. And, with 101 outings for Die Schwarzgelben, he is vastly experienced in the European game.

He is under contract at Westfalenstadion until the summer of 2024 but it seems as though that deal may not run its course. Hazard is a solid player who could do a job.

But it is open to question as to whether he is someone who could help take Newcastle to the next level.
