Alberto Contador hat den Auftakt der Baskenland-Rundfahrt gewonnen.

The Tinkoff-Saxo man took command of the general classification in the 153-kilometre opening leg, which started in Ordizia and included eight categorized climbs.

He put forth a commanding performance to win by 14 seconds ahead of his Spanish compatriot Alejandro Valverde.

Valverde, who himself has been near the top of his game in recent weeks, had kept up with 31-year-old Contador until the final climb of the day, where the eventual winner surged clear.

Contador then safely negotiated the 6.7 kilometre descent for the stage win, with Michal Kwiatkowski a further 20 seconds back from Valverde in third.

The Vuelta al País Vasco, as it is known locally, continues Tuesday with the 155km second stage, from Ordizia to Dantxarinea (Urdazubi).
