Cyriel Dessers insists the gap between Celtic and Rangers isn't that big - despite failing to win an Old Firm game this season.

Double-winning Celts went through the entire campaign unbeaten against their bitter rivals for the first time since 2017/18, winning four of their five meetings. Philippe Clement has yet to get the better of Brendan Rodgers in his first Glasgow derbies in charge and it proved costly as the Hoops got their hands on the Premiership and Scottish Cup.

Ibrox boss Clement has already promised fans there will be a massive rebuild during the summer after yet another year in Celtic's shadow. But Nigerian striker Dessers - who last month claimed the Light Blues were the BEST team in Scotland - remains adamant there isn't a massive gulf in quality between the two sides.

Speaking after Saturday's Hampden defeat, Dessers said: "I think even if you look at the five games this season, the gap is not that big. I think everybody sees that. But yeah, there is still something about these games. We didn't win these games, this season.

"But on the other hand, I think the performance on the day and the game plan worked, it was good and it's something to build on especially in these head to head games."

He added: "To see them celebrate today and 10 days ago, that gives me a lot of energy to go again this summer. It seems weird to say, but I cannot wait for pre-season to start again and to do better this season. So yeah, I'm looking forward to that."
