Daily Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Pitching advice for Monday

A down day for pitching could lead to unpredictable results in daily fantasy baseball contests. What's the best strategy for making lineup picks? Check our notes and rankings for Monday.

Monday is one of those days when there are no "true aces" on the hill. Plenty of guys can perform like an ace, butjust looking at the probable starters doesn't inspire you to say, "Oh yeah, I want that guy in daily fantasy baseball contests." That, of course, makes our rankings tough to compile and advice tough to dish out, but that's never stopped us before, so here we go.

First of all, throw out Blake Snell and Steven Wright since they play the only afternoon game. Next, put Danny Salazar, Robbie Ray, and Jharel Cotton in a special "high-upside" category because of their strikeout ability. Finally, look at the matchups but don't dwell on them since a lot of the best ones on paper are for pitchers who have been walkingbatters/giving up a bunch of homers this year (A.J. Griffin, Derek Holland, Ariel Miranda, Lance Lynn, Jaime Garcia, Jered Weaver).

Basically, it's a free-for-all kind of day when it comes to pitching, which always makes contests unpredictable (and more fun, depending how you look at it). Salazar seems to be the top option because of his strikeout ability, while Lackey stands out because of his general consistency and relatively high probability of a win, but beyond that, there are no "sure things".

If you're just playing one contest, particularly a cash contest, paying up for Salazar or Lackey seems like the smart way to go. If you're in a GPP or doing multiple entries, spread the love around a bit. Ivan Nova has been solid since being traded to the NL, and Charlie Morton has quietly posted a 9.2 K/9 ratio in eight starts between last year and this year, making him an interesting target, too.
