Damian Garcia Rangers efforts stepped up as Nils Koppen jets to transfer summit

Rangers want Damian Garcia as the next part of their summer transfer revamp and Nils Koppen may have made more progress this week.

The Uruguayan, 20, is on the Ibrox shortlist to add to Oscar Cortes who joined this week on another loan, this time with an obligation to buy at the end of the deal. It comes after the club allowed five stars to depart at the expiry of their deals after manager Philippe Clement had spoken on the end of a cycle and a planned summer overhaul.

Garcia may well be the next man in the door at Ibrox should Gers get their way and recruitment chief Koppen seems to be doing all he can to make that happen after he flew into Mexico for the recent TransferRoom summit in Cancun.

Gers have made good use of the meetings in the past with Ross Wilson also a regular at TR's headquarters during their meet-ups. But now it's believed Garcia's club Penarol also had representation at the conference.

That would in all likelihood have led to a meeting between the two clubs with Garcia the main talking point as Gers attempt to make the player their new acquisition.

Penarol president Ignacio Ruglio is reported to be in attendance but he recently clarified the club's position on Garcia specifically.

“The club does not need to sell. The size of the offer does not matter, the priority from now on is sports," he said.
