Daniel Cormier on Alexander Gustafsson Fight: ‘He’s Going to Lose to Me’

On October 3, at the Toyota Center in Houston, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will put his title on the line for the first time against second-ranked Alexander Gustafsson. Discussing the match-up, “DC” believes that he's simply better than the Swede.

Cormier won the vacant 205-pound title by defeating Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 in May. That fight came about after former champion Jon Jones was stripped of the title due to violating the promotion's code of conduct policy for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident. Some consider Cormier more of an interim champion than the real titleholder, but the 36-year-old Olympian isn't bothered by it.

“I don’t’ really care too much about people saying that I don’t have the real belt. I know how hard I’ve worked. I know how hard I’ve committed to this goal,” he said during the recent UFC's “Go Big” press conference in Las Vegas.

“I get my hand raised when I fight. I’ve lost once and every other time I’ve dominated the competition. That will not change on October 3. I think that Alexander Gustafsson is a good fighter, but there are levels to this fighting and I’m just a little bit better than he is.”

Gustafsson gave Jones his toughest test when the two collided at UFC 165 in September 2013. The fight earned Fight of the Night honors and was considered the 2013 Fight of the Year. Cormier is tired of hearing about the fight that “The Mauler” lost, and thinks that everyone should know what's going to happen when the two face off in the UFC 192 main event.

“You guys talk about a fight that he lost. He lost. Let’s stop talking about the fight that he lost and talk about something that this guy has done positive. And when you look at it that way, you guys know exactly what’s going to happen on October 3. He’s going to lose to me. When you look at it objectively and not because he fought a guy closer than I fought him, you realize what’s going to happen on October 3,” he said.

Gustafsson is coming off a loss to Johnson in January. He's one of the few fighters in the organization's history to be granted a title fight while losing in his last outing, aside from a champion getting an immediate rematch. Cormier plans to put Gustafsson on a two-fight losing streak when the two meet in October.
