Daniel Cormier Injury Reportedly Sidelines Him for 4 to 6 Weeks

Daniel Cormier Out of UFC 206 Main Event

News broke on Friday that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier would be unable to fight Jon Jones at UFC 197 on April 23 in Las Vegas, as planned.

While much speculation circulated about a possible leg injury, there was little specific detail on it until Saturday, when the UFC announced Cormier's replacement, Ovince Saint Preux.

In revealing the new fight, UFC officials revealed that Cormier suffered an injury of the interosseous membrane in his left leg. According to ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto, who spoke with Cormier, the fighter said he expects a four-to-six-week recovery time.

“The decision to not fight on April 23rd was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make,” Cormier posted to Instagram on Friday. “I've been scheduled to fight 18 times and I have made that walk every time. I want to apologize to Jon Jones, Lorenzo Fertitta, Dana White, and all of the UFC fans for not being able to defend my title. This truly saddens me, but as with everything else in life, it goes on. The recovery should not take very long and I can't wait to compete and defend my title again. For all the fans, thanks for your support, I appreciate each and every one of you.”

Cormier became the light heavyweight champion just one fight after failing to take the belt from around Jones' waist at UFC 182 last year.

Jones was stripped of the belt following an arrest for a felony charge of hit and run in Albuquerque, N.M. While he was sorting out his legal issues, Cormier fought and defeated Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the vacant belt at UFC 187. He then successfully defended the title against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 last October.

Jones will face Saint Preux for an interim version of the light heavyweight championship in the newly revised UFC 197 main event.
