Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been told that he should not give Antonio Conte any money to spend in the upcoming January transfer window for one major reason.

Spurs are being tipped to be major players in the January market, with at least one centre-back, a midfield playmaker and potentially a new right wing-back on Conte’s list of ‘needs’.

However, the Italian is out of contract at the end of the season. And for that very reason, former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes Conte should not be given funds. Unless he commits his future to the club.

The north London side dropped to fourth in the table after their 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

However, they remain firmly in the mix for the Champions League places and will also play AC Milan in the last 16 of the competition next year.

But despite things going relatively well, Conte is refusing to discuss his future for now. Indeed, his main focus is trying to win the club their trophy since 2008.

Sherwood, however, feels that failure to secure the latter will see Conte walk away from the job.

Conte could still end up walking away

The former Blackburn and Tottenham midfielder told talkSPORT: “I think it’s a huge opportunity for Antonio Conte but only if they’re going to spend an awful lot of money.

“It’s very difficult to win the Premier League we know because Manchester City are so good and they bought [Erling] Haaland which takes them even further away.

“There’s a lot of clubs struggling. We talk about top four, I think that top four would be a huge success for Tottenham. Because Liverpool are out of it, Manchester United are out of it, Chelsea are out of it.

“I think that it’s a really difficult season for them. Conte keeps talking about the project and how he needs patience but he hasn’t signed a new contract.

“I’d suggest signing the contract and then talking about patience and calming everyone down. I think that if he doesn’t win a trophy this year then he’ll leave, I really do.”

Sherwood urges Levy caution

It’s well known that Conte wants to add at least two, possibly three, additions in January. But Sherwood has urged his old boss Levy to be cautious.

He added: “If I’m chairman Daniel Levy I’m not giving him any money until he commits to the club. Why would I buy players to fit the Antonio Conte style if I’m going to bring in another manager with different ideas?

“I think that this group of players are very good, he just needs to trust them a lot more. You can’t just wait until you’re 2-0 down to start playing.

“He keeps talking about how good Liverpool are but Liverpool beat no one away from home this season [until Sunday], so they’re not fantastic and I thought he missed a trick.”
