Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly walking a thin tightrope at the King Power Stadium, with pundit Darren Bent making a big claim on the Irishman’s future.
The Foxes are bottom of the Premier League table, having lost their last four games. Indeed, they only have one point so far – a 2-2 draw with Brentford on the opening day – to show for their efforts so far. Leicester endured a difficult transfer window with mainstays Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana both departing the club.
The Foxes also they left it to the final day of the window to seal their first outfield signing. That was the addition of Belgium defender Wout Faes, who arrived in a £15.3m deal from Reims.
However, the struggles on and off the field have not gone unnoticed. Indeed, Rodgers spoke out against the club’s owners and their apparent demise in the aftermath of Thursday’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United.
“This isn’t the club that it was two years ago. That’s the reality,” he said. “To have to watch every club in the top five leagues get players in and for us not to be able to improve, that was difficult. It’s not just as a manager but for the players, because they want to compete. This group have shown they can compete but we needed help. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to get that
“”We haven’t brought any new players in, bar one late on, in the last two windows and that’s a replacement.
“So these players need the supporters. It’s a moment that’s really important.”
Those comments are understood to have not gone down well among those in control at Leicester. And while they still support their manager, there is concern about the direction the results are going in.
Darren Bent claims Brendan Rodgers wants to be sacked
Analysing those comments, talkSPORT pundit Bent reckons Rodgers wants the Foxes board to call time on his reign.
“They’re in a bit of a mess,” he said. “The comments that the manager has made, ‘this isn’t a club it was a couple of years ago’, that just tells me that wants to be sacked. He doesn’t want to walk away from it because he’ll lose a lot of money.
“He wants to get sacked. You look at the comments Scott Parker made at Bournemouth about needing help and bodies, he kept coming out challenging the board. It’s almost as though saying to everybody else, ‘it’s not my fault, it’s their fault’.
“Even if you continue with the comments that Brendan Rodgers made, ‘we needed help and we haven’t been able to do that’. He understands the fans frustrations, they see all their rivals getting all these players and he’s not getting any. It’s quite clearly saying, ‘it’s not my fault, I wanted the players, but we’re not getting the players in’.
“I’m a big fan of his, but I do think that it has become a bit stale and I definitely think he doesn’t want to walk away, but him himself, he’s asking politely, ‘I want the sack’.”
