Darwin Núñez asked to make animal noises as bizarre interview clip of Liverpool striker emerges

Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez didn't have the perfect season in 2023/24. It was the Uruguayan striker's second campaign in the Premier League with Liverpool, and Núñez started the campaign brightly before tailing off in the second half.

In the first half of the season, Núñez was firing on all cylinders and many believed this was the version of the player that most had been expecting when he signed from Benfica in the summer of 2022. He was more composed and less chaotic than in his first season. He wasn't scoring lots of goals but his contribution to the team was vital in the opening few months.

However, Núñez finished the season with 11 league goals and eight assists for the Reds: not the worst tally, but not the heights he can reach at his peak, either. Moreover, It makes for more difficult reading when one realizes only six of his goals arrived post-Christmas as his form and confidence dropped in the final third of the season. Núñez only scored twice in the final 13 league games as Liverpool's title challenge ran out of steam.

There had been rumors of a rift between Núñez and outgoing manager Jürgen Klopp when social media videos went viral showing the 24-year-old not applauding Klopp during his guard of honor on the final day of the season against Wolves at Anfield. Núñez however shut down any such rift in an interview with newspaper El Pais.

"We were all a little shocked by Klopp's departure; no one expected it," said Núñez. "It is a shame that he is leaving. I personally would like him to leave in a big way, winning things, and it didn't happen that way. It's also a shame for the players. I wish him the best in the world."

Things have taken a surreal twist for the striker as, in a video interview with Rafael Cotelo on YouTube called PorLaCamiseta (For The Shirt), the Liverpool star could be seen mimicking animals in one segment of the video. Núñez was given orders to imitate a specific animal depending on whichever one Cotelo selected, and Núñez could be seen trying to mimic a tiger, turtle, lion, cat and even an elephant.

The interview, which was published a couple of weeks ago, is quite lengthy and goes into various aspects of Núñez's career, but all taken with light-heartedness and touches of comedy. The animal section was shared on the Reddit threat r/LiverpoolFC, much to the amusement of those in the comments.

Liverpool.com says: It's a surreal piece of video to see Núñez imitating various animals, but it shows that the striker has a sense of humor and is relaxed after what has been a difficult season for him on a personal level. Next year, he should be looking to kick on again under the coaching of Arne Slot.
