Darwin Nunez appears set to become the most expensive Liverpool player of all time – ahead of Virgil van Dijk – after the Reds reached a monumental agreement with Benfica for the striker.

Nunez has been on Manchester United’s radar in recent months after netting 34 goals in 41 matches for Benfica during the 2021-22 campaign. But as the Red Devils lingered over the potential Cristiano Ronaldo successor, Liverpool marched in and put themselves in pole position for him.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool made a bid for Nunez on Friday. United were still in contact with his agent then but didn’t move to match or exceed the offer.

Romano provides an update on the situation, while writing for The Guardian. It seems Benfica have accepted the bid as the transfer specialist claims Liverpool have agreed a deal for the goalscorer’s signing.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will pay £68.3million up front, with another £17m coming in the form of add-ons – taking the transfer to £85.3m in total.

This would make Nunez Liverpool’s most expensive capture, ahead of the £75m they paid Southampton for Van Dijk in 2018.

Such a fee would also put the Uruguay international fourth on the list of most expensive Premier League arrivals. Jack Grealish is first, while Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba are second and third respectively.

Romano states Liverpool are now coming up with the necessary paperwork to complete the deal. Nunez is likely to pen a five-year contract at Anfield.

In a separate tweet, the journalist revealed Liverpool have come to an agreement on personal terms, meaning the move is now only hinging on a medial. Nunez could sign the deal on Monday after flying to the UK – he will then complete medical tests.

Length of Darwin Nunez Liverpool contract emerges

Nunez will become the second forward addition this year, following Luis Diaz’s January move from Porto.

Nunez and Diaz will help to take Liverpool’s attack into a new era as Sadio Mane prepares to move on. The Senegal international will soon enter the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract and wants an exit this summer. Bayern Munich are the frontrunners to sign him but must improve on their second bid to do so.

The capture of Nunez will also ease Liverpool fans’ fears about Mo Salah, if only slightly. The 29-year-old will remain at the club for next season but faces an uncertain future after that.

Nunez possesses brilliant movement in the box and sharp finishing, which should make him a success in England. However, the massive transfer fee will also put huge pressure on him to be a success from the start.

And with the attacker still just 22 years old, he must be given enough time to adjust before showing his true class.

Meanwhile, Liverpool may lose out on the signing of a Barcelona midfielder amid Joan Laporta’s latest comments.
