Liverpool's Darwin Nunez might have thrown a spanner in the works for Damian Garcia's potential switch to Rangers, with the Scottish club reportedly eyeing the Uruguayan midfielder.

Garcia, who shines at Nunez's former club Penarol, has caught the attention of several teams including Rangers after a standout season, as noted by South American journalist Nathan Joyes.

With only six months left on his contract, Garcia is locked in a bitter row with Penarol, and his agent Edgardo 'Chino' Lasalvia has shockingly revealed that the player is struggling to pay his rent, reports the Daily Record.

Lasalvia also highlighted the missed opportunity for Penarol, lamenting that a slice of Nunez's £85million switch to Liverpool could have put them in a stronger financial position and allowed for a lucrative deal for Garcia. "If Penarol had a percentage of Valverde or Darwin Nunez today, as I asked them please, Penarol would have much more money," he said.

Nunez joined Penarol as a youngster in 2014 and broke into their first team in 2017 before leaving two years later for Almeria. While it's standard for clubs to include a sell-on clause when parting with top prospects, Lasalvia indicated that Penarol didn't heed his advice.

Now, with the prospect of Garcia's departure, Penarol are expected to take a different approach, potentially impacting Rangers or any other interested party with a future sell-on clause.

Lasalvia has been vocal about Garcia's financial struggles, even disclosing that he's had to assist him financially. He also highlighted the paltry "two pesos" offer made by Penarol's Vice President Eduardo Zaidensztat for a contract renewal.

He commented: "What Damian Garcia earns is not good, Penarol can ask for whatever they want, the manager on duty can ask for whatever he wants for the players, because as the vice president (Eduardo Zaidensztat) said, which I heard with an incredible hesitation, the players belong to the club. It's very nice."

Amidst speculation linking Rangers with Garcia, Lasalvia hinted at a potential move to the MLS for his client, valuing him at over £2million. "I really like the MLS for Damian, but there are some other things from Mexico and some other markets," he disclosed to Sport 890.
