Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has completely put to bed any talk of comparisons with new Anfield signing Darwin Nunez.

The Merseyside outfit confirmed the signing of the Benfica hotshot last week in deal worth £64.1million, with a further £21.3m payable in add-ons for the talented Uruguay forward.

The 22-year-old was the Portugal league’s top goalscorer last season with 32 goals. But he also notched six times in the Champions League, including in both legs of the quarter-finals against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Those performances, where he trouled Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk, appear to be what convinced Klopp that Nunez was worth taking a chance on.

Add in that the fact that Manchester City brought in Erling Haaland and Liverpool had to act. Especially given that Sadio Mane is now expected to complete his move to Bayern Munich.

Nunez follows in the footsteps of compatriot Suarez, who spent three years on Merseyside.

The 35-year-old scored 82 goals during 2011 and 2014 before acrimoniously joining Barcelona.

But despite the two forwards coming from the same country, Suarez insists they should not be compared. Indeed, the current Atletico Madrid frontman claims that Nunez will make his own impression on English football.

Nunez to write his own history

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Suarez said: “He (Nunez) will write his own story at Liverpool. He is Uruguayan and he is a forward but that is where the comparisons stop – he is a special player and doesn’t need to be compared with anybody.

“It was last season that Europe started to take notice of him because of his performances for Benfica. But from an early age I could see there was something special in him.

“While he was at Almeria I recommended him to Barcelona but it was something that never happened.”

Nunez spent a season with Almeria in 2019 before heading to Benfica.

In 84 appearances for the Portuguese giants he scored an impressive 47 goals and notched 16 assists.

That led to speculation over a move to Liverpool or Manchester United. However, the Red Devils pulled out of an deal, leaving the Reds to get their man.

Nunez will make his Premier League debut for Liverpool at Fulham on August 6.
