Manchester United are reportedly one of the sides ‘best positioned’ to complete the signing of prolific Benfica forward Darwin Nunez this summer.

Nunez has been heavily linked with a move to United, along with the likes of Liverpool, PSG and Atletico Madrid, after an incredible campaign in the Portuguese top flight and Europe.

And reports last month claimed that incoming Old Trafford chief Erik ten Hag has already requested that his new club sign the 22-year-old.

Ten Hag watched at first hand as Nunez scored to knock his Ajax side out of the Champions League this term.

The exciting forward has actually plundered 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions this season.

That has seen a number of Europe’s elite clubs to express an interest in the player. However, Portuguese outlet Record claims that the Red Devils are one of the teams best placed to seal his transfer.

Benfica are hoping to recoup a fee in the region of £85million for the striker. They are, however, hoping a bidding war drives that price up for one of the top young players in Europe.

While primarily a No.9, Nunez is also versatile to play as wide man in a front three. That sort of flexibility, plus the goals that come with it, make him an extremely attractive option.

As for United, Ten Hag is well known to want to strengthen his attacking options this summer.

Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial are both certain to leave. Meanwhile, there are also continuing doubts over Marcus Rashford’s future and whether Ten Hag actually wants United’s current top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nunez made for the Premier League

Darwin Nunez has the build and qualities to be a big hit in the Premier League, but he will need creative players around him to unlock his full potential.

The lively forward has been described as an ‘absolute beast’ in some quarters. Indeed, he looked the real deal when Liverpool faced Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals, scoring in both games.

Jurgen Klopp was clearly impressed, saying: “Really good, really good. I knew before, of course. But he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. Good, really good. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

Nunez is a potential superstar in the making. However, the big question remains if he will join a club without Champions League football?
