Edinburgh have announced that Scotland hooker Dave Cherry has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at the United Rugby Championship team.

On the back of being included in Gregor Townsend’s squad for the upcoming Six Nations, Cherry has another reason to celebrate with this contract extension.

Cherry, 32, has played 63 times for Edinburgh thus far and scored his seventh try for the club during their Champions Cup victory against Castres on Sunday.

Thrilled to re-sign with Edinburgh

“Edinburgh is home for me and my fiancee, so I’m absolutely thrilled to extend terms with a club that means so much to me,” said the hard-working front-row.

“I’m really enjoying my rugby at the moment, and I think that has shown in my performances in the last few years.

“I love being part of this squad. We have a such a tight knit group of guys who all play with the same mentality and desire to win.

“I really believe this team can achieve something special, and it will be a brilliant occasion taking on Saracens at DAM Health Stadium this Sunday. It’s a match that everyone connected to the club can’t wait for.”

Edinburgh head coach Mike Blair, whose side is preparing for a crucial Champions Cup fixture against Saracens on Sunday, was full of praise for hooker Cherry.

“Dave is a real leader for us and someone that is hugely respected around the club because of his commitment to the jersey – he loves representing the city and when he speaks, players stand up and take notice,” he said.

“Dave is a quality operator with a tough edge to his game. We’ve been really impressed by his performances for club and country and were delighted to see him named in Scotland’s Six Nations squad earlier this week.”

Connacht continue re-signing spree

Elsewhere in the United Rugby Championship, Connacht have continued to lock in several key players to their squad in preparation for next season and beyond.

The week kicked off with flying wing John Porch signing a new contract, and now Caolin Blade, Dave Heffernan and Niall Murray have also inked new contracts.

Scrum-half Blade, who has signed a new three-year deal, has made 160 appearances for the province and is delighted to secure his future at the Sportsground.

“I’m very proud and happy to commit to Connacht Rugby for another three years. This club means a lot to me, and I want to do everything I can to help them succeed into the future. The prospect of training and playing in our new stadium really appeals to me so I can’t wait to see what’s in store,” Blade said.

Hooker Heffernan, who inked a two-year extension at the Galway outfit, has aspirations to once again feature for Ireland as he looks forward to the future.

“I’m delighted to be staying at Connacht for another two years and in truth it was an easy decision for me,” said the seven-cap international forward. “I feel like I have been playing some good rugby this season so now I want to kick on and achieve success with both Connacht and hopefully Ireland down the line.”

Home-grown lock Murray added about his own two-year extension: “I’m really pleased to sign a two-year contract and extend my stay at my home province. The club gave me my first opportunity and since then I have loved every minute. Now I want to do everything I can to keep improving and helping the club succeed.”
