Dave King has slammed the abuse of Rangers captain James Tavernier after the Old Firm derby.

The Gers skipper was targeted after the latest defeat to Celtic with insults hurled at him outside Ibrox. Tavernier was escorted out of the ground by security as seething supporters waited to make their displeasure known to the players, with the captain a prime candidate.

Philippe Clement wasn't safe either and footage surfaced showing him being booed by fans as he was confronted by a small group of while making his way to the car park. Shareholder King insists turning on their own is not the 'Rangers way' and has singled out the targeting of Tavernier.

He said: "It is incredibly disappointing to hear that a small minority of supporters are letting their anger temporarily overcome them to the point of directing personal abuse at our players. We are all immensely disappointed at the performance of our team and its decline since title 55. That, however, is not the fault of the present team or the individual players who were approached to play for the club and who are mostly doing their best.

"Individual players can't be held accountable if the combined result of recruitment and team preparation results in poor performance. Rangers supporters are loyal. Turning on our captain, who has been 100 per cent loyal to Rangers and repeatedly saved us in key games for a decade, is the opposite of loyalty and I hope that most supporters will join me in condemning such behaviour. Turning on our players is not the Rangers way."
