David Beckham boldly predicts England v Argentina World Cup final

David Beckham’s England career was dominated by games with Argentina – and he reckons the two old foes will meet in the World Cup final next month.

The Three Lions overcame Tunisia with a last-gasp Harry Kane header in their opening game, whilst Argentina were left to rue Lionel Messi’s penalty miss as they drew with minnows Iceland in the first game. But Becks thinks the duo will enjoy successful tournaments.

His World Cup career was dominated by games with Argentina; in 1998 he was sent off for lashing out at Diego Simeone as England were knocked out in the last 16, before earning redemption as he scored the winning penalty against the same opposition four years later in the group stages.

That meeting in Sapporo was the last competitive one between England and Argentina, but Becks thinks they will do battle at the Luzhniki Stadium on July 15.

“I believe Argentina will play against England in the final,” Beckham said during a visit to China.

“I think obviously my choice would be England to win the competition, but that’s me being biased and passionate about my country.

“I’m very happy that we won the first game in the group. England are a very young team, they don’t have a lot of experience yet and the journey of the World Cup will become harder and harder because there are many good teams in the tournament.”
