David de Gea responds to ‘noise’ surrounding Manchester United contract negotiations

David de Gea has reiterated his “love” for Manchester United, following reports that he had rejected a contract offer from the club.

The Spaniard’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, after United opted against triggering a 12-month extension option due to a desire for De Gea to take a pay reduction.

He is currently on £375,000-a-week, after signing a huge-money deal in September 2019 when he was also in the last year of contract at Old Trafford.

It was reported earlier this week by The Athletic that De Gea has rejected United’s opening offer to keep him at the club beyond the summer, though there is a belief that an agreement will be reached between the two parties.

De Gea has now been at United for almost 12 years and, ahead of Erik ten Hag’s side making the trip to face Newcastle this weekend in their first match back after the international break, insisted he is still happy at the club but wanted to keep his focus on matters on the pitch.

“Of course I’ve been here many, many years,” De Gea told Sky Sports. “Enjoying every moment in this club and playing many games.

“It’s a massive club, I love the club and I’m really happy here of course. It has been the same over the years, a lot of noise about everything in this club but the players, we just focus on games.

‘Especially the one we have on Sunday is a massive one for us because we want to finish in the top four.

“Like I say we have many, many games. We have to be on training, recovering well, helping the team and that’s the most important thing, more than contracts or anything.”
