West Ham have a big decision to make this summer – does David Moyes stay or not? As it stands, David Moyes is set to leave the club at the end of the season given that he only signed a six-month contract when he joined. But does he deserve a new contract?

When Moyes first arrived

There is no doubt that Moyes’ arrival at the club was met with a lot of frustration. Fans were angry that the club had signed a manager who had ‘failed’ at his previous clubs. Moyes also was relegated with Sunderland and we were 18th in the Premier League when he arrived. The arguments made against Moyes were somewhat fair.

It was a slow start for Moyes with no wins and three defeats in his first four games but it is clear that Moyes has transformed the team and the players.

What has Moyes achieved so far?

Our biggest issue was conceding goals and when Moyes arrived, we had conceded 23 goals in 11 games. We made far too many poor errors during games which led to humiliating defeats. Since Moyes’ arrival, we have conceded 23 goals in 16 games. We look more confident defensively and this has shown in our big-game performances where we beat Chelsea and Arsenal, keeping two clean sheets.

Another problem was that of Marko Arnautovic’s form. He was our record signing but failed to score once in the Premier League under Slaven Bilic. It looked like he may have been on his way out of the club but Moyes has certainly gotten the best out of him. Arnautovic, on current form, is one of the best players in the Premier League and he has scored crucial goals in recent games.

Moyes’ ability to increase the performances of players to a higher level than what we saw earlier in the season has been remarkable. We are no longer losing home games too and we currently have the 9th best home record in the Premier League and this has happened with the team facing an injury crisis.

Expectations for the season

When Moyes took over we were 18th. We are now 12th and only 1 point from 10th. It is hard to argue against giving Moyes a new contract. Many feared that we would go down this season and 11 games left to play, we can finish in the top half of the table.

This was unimaginable when Moyes took over and he should stay on as manager.
