West Ham boss David Moyes has made an admission about Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder completed a £45million switch to Manchester City.

The England regular was chased by the Hammers during the January transfer window. However, he ended up remaining at Elland Road as Leeds refused to offload their midfield talisman.

The 26-year-old is, however, now a City player after the champions got their man.

But Moyes has revealed his frustration that West Ham were unable to get a deal over the line.

The Guardian claimed back in January that the London club had failed with a £50m offer, only for City to strike a lesser deal some seven months later.

And Moyes has revealed his disappointment the Hammers could not get the signing over the line.

The West Ham boss told the Daily Mail: “We bid more than that. We’re trying to be competitive with the big teams.

“If we can’t, we have to find another way of keeping up with them.”

Moyes wanted to pair Phillips with his England midfield partner Declan Rice. However, it was not to be and the Scot is still searching for fresh additions to his squad.

The Hammers have so far landed Nayef Aguerd, Alphonse Areola and, most recently, Flynn Downes.

Hammers hit hard by Danjuma blow

Meanwhile, West Ham United will not be landing Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma this summer, according to a report.

The former Bournemouth winger had come to the attention of a number of clubs after an impressive 2021-22 season in LaLiga. He bagged 16 goals and four assists in 34 games last season prompting interest from West Ham.

Newcastle United, Manchester United and Liverpool have also been interested in the 25-year-old. But it was West Ham who pushed on with a deal to sign the player.

David Moyes is on the hunt for quality attacking reinforcements and Danjuma was a man the club were keen on.

However, talks have led to the interest from the Hammers to be knocked back, according to Goal. And as per the source, Danjuma’s “top priority at the moment is to consolidate his brilliant last campaign”.
