West Ham United have paused the departure of Issa Diop to Fulham under the instructions of David Moyes, according to one reporter.

Diop recently emerged as a target for newly promoted Fulham after falling down the West Ham hierarchy. In fact, reports indicated that Fulham had already made a couple of bids.

After West Ham signed Nayef Aguerd in Diop’s centre-back position, it appeared it would be a matter of time before the former Toulouse man moved on. However, one week after those Fulham rumours emerged, Diop remains among Moyes’ ranks.

According to RMC Sport journalist Loic Tanzi, West Ham have put the deal on hold. Supposedly, manager Moyes has asked the club to wait before offloading Diop.

At the same time, he has made the Frenchman aware that he is only his fifth-choice option at centre-back. Aguerd, Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna are all above Diop in Moyes’ thinking.

Interestingly, there have been reports that Moyes is pondering a switch to a back three ahead of the new season. In that case, he may want extra cover – but it could also come in the shape of current left-back Aaron Cresswell.

For now, though, Diop’s status is still to be determined. His contract only has one more year left on it, but West Ham have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Across London, Fulham have been getting busier in the transfer market. Joao Palhinha and Andreas Pereira have both signed to strengthen their midfield.

Defence may be the next area they look at, although there may be an anxious wait before they can know if Diop will be part of their rebuild.

David Moyes should let Issa Diop move on

When the time for a final decision comes, West Ham should cash in on Diop this summer, while they still have the opportunity.

It would also benefit the 25-year-old to get a fresh start elsewhere, preventing his once promising career from stagnating.

Continuing in the Premier League, albeit at a lower ranked side, would be a suitable next step for Diop. He should be approaching his best years, so would not want to spend them on the bench.

Besides, West Ham have established themselves in a high enough position not to class Fulham as direct competitors, so should not be too concerned about that aspect either.

Perhaps it still is a matter of when rather than if when it comes to Diop moving on. His suitors will just have to be a little more patient before they can get their man.

West Ham are hoping to gain €20m (£17m) from a potential sale of Diop, who has made 118 appearances for the club across four seasons.
