With Sporting Lisbon ‘close’ to losing star man Pedro Porro to Tottenham, they have reportedly lined up Brighton right-back Tariq Lamptey as a potential replacement.

The Ghana international has featured 16 times in the league for the Seagulls this season but has mainly been used as a late substitute. This suggests that Roberto de Zerbi may be willing to let the 22-year-old leave this winter, with Sporting looking to agree on an initial loan deal.

Spurs manager Antonio Conte is a big admirer of Porro and it’s no secret that he has been pushing to get a January deal over the line.

The Athletic’s David Ornsetin has also confirmed Sporting’s interest in Lamptey, suggesting that if a loan deal goes through, it could speed up Spurs’ pursuit of Porro.

It was reported on Thursday that Tottenham are edging closer to an agreement, despite seeing an initial £39.6m (€45m) offer knocked back by the Portuguese club.

Sporting have allegedly requested that Porro is allowed to play in their upcoming League Cup final on Saturday before a transfer is completed.

Porro has been one of the club’s star performers this season, scoring two goals and making six assists in 14 league appearances.

Indeed, the Spanish full-back has the potential to have a huge impact on Spurs’ season if they can get the deal over the line, with Conte keen to reinforce that area after being left unconvinced by Emerson Royal, Djed Spence and Matt Doherty.

Lamptey could reignite his career at Sporting Lisbon

As mentioned, Lamptey has struggled to play consistent minutes for Brighton this year. He has made 16 league appearances overall, but the vast majority of these have been coming off the bench late on in the game.

He arrived on the south coast in 2020 on a £1.2m deal from Chelsea, where he spent his youth career, chalking up 71 appearances for the Seagulls since then.

According to reports coming out of PortugalLamptey is a ‘possibility’ for Sporting, who will need to replace their star man Porro in what remains of the current window.

It is believed that the Brighton player would be keen on the move as he wants to play more regular football.

The report does not reveal the Seagull’s asking price for Lamptey, but Transfermarkt value him at approximately £15m, with the player signig a new contract with Brighton two weeks ago.

Sporting would prefer to sign him on loan, but it’s likely the Portuguese club would have to table an offer close to that amount to get a permanent deal over the line.

The funds generated from a Lamptey departure, on top of those received from the sale of Leandro Trossard, could come in handy for De Zerbi, as the manager looks to make more signings before the window closes.

Out of favour Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, for example, is being linked with a shock winter move to the Amex as he looks for one last chance to reignite his Premier League career.

It seems a deal for Lamptey has a good chance of happening if Tottenham sign Porro as expected, so Brighton will be a team to watch up until deadline day.
