David Ortiz wants to 'dip his toe' into baseball broadcasting

Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz looks like he’s thoroughly enjoying his retirement. That is, if a relaxed beach selfie indicates enjoyment. (It definitely does, because who wouldn’t want to be on a beach right now?) But a beach selfie doesn’t mean that Big Papi doesn’t miss baseball. And it looks like he’s doing something about it.

No, he’s not jumping back into a uniform and picking up a bat again. (Sadly.) He’s found a different way to involve himself in baseball and use his extensive expertise. According to Red Sox president Sam Kennedy, Ortiz is interested in broadcasting, and might make an appearance in the Red Sox booth in 2017.

“It’ll be fun to watch the next stage of his career,” Kennedy said. “He’s got a lot of different interests. Broadcasting is certainly one. It’d be interesting to see if he goes into national broadcasting. We’d certainly love to have him part of our local broadcast team on a limited basis. He wanted to dip his toe into that water.”

So nothing it definite right now, but it sounds like the Red Sox are willing to have him on board.

David Ortiz loves the game and was a ridiculously fun player, so it’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t bring that with him into the booth. His former teammate Pedro Martinez is great as a baseball commentator, and Big Papi has the same kind of loose attitude. Pedro’s honest, but he’s always looking for the fun and excitement in any game or player that he’s talking about.

If Ortiz does well in the Red Sox booth, his next stop could be MLB Network, and he could even do some work as a postseason analyst. I mean, imagine David Ortiz on Fox Sports sitting next to Alex Rodriguez and sparring with Pete Rose. Who wouldn’t tune into that?
