Davy Klaassen never had any intention of signing for Rangers as he had his set on an emotional return to Ajax.

According to reports, the Ibrox side made their move to bring in the free agent attacking midfielder after the closure of the transfer window following his departure from Inter Milan. But he has opted for a THIRD spell at the Amsterdam giants and was announced as their player again this week.

Gers perhaps didn't do as much business as they ideally would have liked and so it was thought the free agent market was a possibility, with manager Philippe Clement refusing to rule that out. So it was no surprise when it was claimed they had made their move for the 31-year-old.

But he went back to the Eredivisie side for whom he has made over 300 appearances over two spells, winning multiple trophies along the way. And Klaaassen has now admitted he only had eyes for Ajax when plotting his next move.

He said: "They (Inter) didn’t want me to leave. So, I went to the coach and said ‘Coach, I don’t know. I want to go to Ajax, I want to go home.’

“I told him I wanted to leave because I cannot give my all anymore and that is unfair for you too. 'Coach, I just want to go home'."

Clement had admitted signing free agents was a possibility when quizzed, especially in defensive midfield after not signing another option.

He said: "Yes, we talked about that within the club and that was the initial plan. So we now need to find solutions within the squad to do it in a different way to before.

"Could we still look at free agents? That’s still a possibility, yes. Connor Barron has been filling that role and Dujon Sterling can do it also, as can Niko Raskin.”
