Dawid Malan has been recalled to the England Test squad for the first time in three years, with Dom Sibley dropped ahead of next week’s Third Test against India at Headingley.

Malan last played for the Test side in the summer of 2018 but has since become a regular in white-ball cricket and is currently ranked as the no1 T20 batsman in the world.

He scored 199 for Yorkshire in his sole first-class innings so far this season and after England’s top order faltered again in the Second Test defeat to India at Lord’s, Chris Silverwood has opted to draw on his experience.

“Dawid Malan deserves his opportunity in the Test arena,” Silverwood said. “He has a lot of experience across all formats and, if called upon, I am confident that he can come and do well on his home ground.”

Sibley, meanwhile, has failed to pass 30 in four innings so far in the India series and was out for a duck as England collapsed for just 120 on Monday.

Both he and Zak Crawley, who was dropped from the XI for the second Test but kept in the squad, have been released to play for their counties, as has Jack Leach, though he will remain on standby. The spinner enjoyed an excellent winter on the subcontinent but has yet to feature for England in the home summer.

“Dom Sibley needs some time away to regain his confidence after a challenging period,” Silverwood added. “He will return to Warwickshire to spend time in the middle without the scrutiny and find some rhythm and confidence.

“Zak is still a massive part of our plans moving forward, but we feel he would benefit from time outside the pressure of international competition to get some time working on his skills. He has a bright future and I do not doubt that his time will come again in the Test arena.”

Mark Wood remains in the squad despite injuring his shoulder on day four of the second Test and England are hopeful the quick will be fit to play at Leeds, but uncapped Saqib Mahmood of Lancashire has also been called up after an impressive summer both with the red ball at county level and in white-ball cricket for England.
