Declan Rice says England’s heroes have “created our own bit of history” by reaching the Euro 2020 quarter-finals with their first knockout win over Germany since 1966.

Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored as England beat Germany 2-0 at Wembley and Rice says England are confident of their chances at the tournament.

After the Germany win, Rice told the BBC: “It is incredible. A lot of people had written us off, complaints about performances and not scoring a lot of goals. You read a lot of things but as players you put that to the back of your mind and you want to prove people.

“With a full house, everyone had that fire in their belly to knock Germany out and progress to the next round.

“It is history. In the press conference this week all the players have been asked about the previous games against Germany but we have created our own bit of history.

“These things come do not come round often and we have made the most of it. It was a pleasure to be out there on the pitch.”

Rice believes Sterling has proved his critics wrong during this tournament and described Kane as someone who is “made for the big occasion”.

The West Ham midfielder said: “Raz is just proving so many people wrong. He is scoring so many goals for us and it crucial.

“And H, he is made for the big occasion. He ran himself into the ground and scored the goal that put the game to bed.

“We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves because Saturday is a massive game now. We travel to Rome and we want to win that and progress into the semi-finals.

“I have not been a part of a team with togetherness like this. We really believe we have got the quality and with the tournament mainly being at Wembley, that we can keep progressing.”
