Deepak Chahar Has Got Every Right To Feel Disappointed – Aakash Chopra On T20 World Cup Exclusion

Ex-cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra thinks Indian pacer Deepak Chahar was wrongfully excluded from the squad for the T20 World Cup. Team India announced a squad which included only three front-line bowlers while Chahar was put into the reserves.

Chahar has been a great find for the Men in Blue especially in the shortest format. He holds the record for best figures in a T20I match – 6/7 against Bangladesh in Nagpur. His ability to make a new ball talk was also exploited by MS Dhoni for CSK.

Unfortunately, Chahar couldn’t find a spot in the 15-member squad for the ICC event. Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the only three pacers India selected. Aakash Chopra opined that the Indian team might be short on the pace-bowling front as a result.

These are Deepak Chahar’s numbers. 20 wickets in 14 T20i @ 19.3 with an eco of 7.6 rpo. IPL numbers aren’t too dissimilar either. You can call me a little biased towards Deepak (I think I am) but he’s got every right to feel disappointed. India is one fast-bowler shy, me feels,” Chopra wrote on his Twitter account.

Punjab Kings bowler Mohammed Shami was added to the squad much to the surprise of the fans. He last played a T20I way back in December 2020 against Australia. He has played only 12 T20I’s and has picked 12 wickets at an expensive economy rate of 9.80.

Chahar on the other hand has picked 20 wickets in 14 games at a much better economy of 7.59. The slow pitches in UAE will also aid Chahar’s wily slower deliveries. Therefore, his inclusion over Shami was a must, as per Chopra.

There are two major exclusions. Yuzvendra Chahal missing out is shocking and Deepak Chahar’s exclusion is surprising too, as he also gives you wickets with the new ball. Mohammed Shami, as a good a bowler he is, doesn’t have impressive numbers in T20s. Between the two, I would have gone for Deepak Chahar,” Chopra concluded.

India will clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in their first game of the T20 World Cup on October 24. It will be Virat Kohli’s third ICC event as a captain.
