Defending champs Tusker drop points against Ulinzi Stars

Oketch was loaned to Bandari by Gor Mahia last June and hence, he will sit out as per the terms of the deal between the two clubs

Tusker FC scored at the death to deny wasteful Ulinzi Stars maximum points in a Kenyan Premier League match played on Saturday at Afraha Stadium.

The visitors started the match on a high note pinning the hosts in their own half in early proceedings with Dan Waweru trying a long short early on in the 7th minute that unfortunately flew wide.

Allan Wanga was trying to make runs from right and left, but failed to get a clear chance in front of goal as the defenders put him on check, alongside his partner Michael Khamati.

Ulinzi Stars could have gotten a deserved lead in the 29th minute, after a clever through pass but defender Brian Birgen failed to beat goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng'. It was a wakeup call for the defending champions who reacted a few minutes later through Wanga, but again his effort was not fruitful.

A few minutes to the break, Tusker could have scored the opening goal as Michael Khamati was well fed in the danger-zone, but the big man was denied by an outstanding save from keeper James Saruni to ensure the scores remained 0-0 after first-half.

Two minutes after the restart, Samuel Onyango failed to connect a well-placed pass, with Ochieng' stranded as the visitors showed their intent. The 11-times champions ran out of ideas as Ulinzi Ulinzi kept on pressing and creating chances.

Stephen Waruru was introduced to sharpen the attack with 15 minutes left and his impact was felt immediately as he was fed in the danger-zone, and unleashed a rocket past Ochieng’ to give his side a deserved lead.

The champions tried desperately to get back into the game winning a free-kick at the death but Saruni did well to deny Shafik Batambuze. The Brewers continued pushing and their efforts were rewarded at the death when the unmarked Abdul Hassan scored.

Ulinzi Stars now have eight points from four matches.
