Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has stated that he hopes to make the Indian Test team soon. He is currently playing the white-ball formats for India but has not yet been considered for the longest format. The 26-year-old is optimistic, however, of making the squad soon.

Iyer has been nursing a shoulder injury of late. He managed to recover from it fully and is slowly getting back into his groove. He will return to competitive cricket for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2021. Ahead of the big event, Iyer spoke to India Today on his ambitions of playing for the Indian Test team.

Yes, very much. Whenever I open the Indian cricket team’s Instagram page and see the photos (of the Test team), I feel I want to be part of the red-ball team. It’s because my journey started from red-ball. My Ranji Trophy scenarios and India A have been smooth so far.

I personally feel I can be part of the Test team and help them be as consistent as they have going right now. It’s definitely every player’s dream to play all 3 formats. And very soon, it will happen. I am positive about it,” he expressed.

“It would be fun to be part of that team” – Shreyas Iyer on the current Test team

Shreyas Iyer has primarily climbed up the ranks after good performances in first-class games. His IPL stint might have earned him the Indian white-ball stint, but he was already rated a good batsman based on his Ranji Trophy games.

In 54 first-class games, Iyer has amassed 4592 runs with a stellar average of 52.18. It includes 23 fifties and 12 centuries, with a high score of 202*. Having played as many matches in the domestic circuit, Iyer understands the kind of mental resolve needed to play the longest format.

Test cricket tests you mentally and physically. It’s not easy to play 5 days. I have done that in the past. We used to play back-to-back games in Ranji Trophy. If we reached the final, we played 11 games.

That mental toughness is needed as it takes toll on your mind and yeah definitely, this is totally a different level. I totally feel it would be fun to be part of that team because of the way they are going about,” Iyer mentioned.

For now, Shreyas Iyer is training in the UAE for the second leg of the IPL 2021. He will represent the Delhi Capitals (DC), who is placed at the top of the table with six wins out of eight games. The marquee event resumes on September 19, with Mumbai Indians (MI) going up against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
