How the DeLorean DMC-12 Inspired Cambridge Audio’s Newest Amp

Over the years, a few established names in the world of consumer audio have teamed up with notable automotive marques, and now Cambridge Audio, an official partner with DeLorean Motor Company, launches its first product in celebration of just such a collaboration. As the spirit of DeLorean’s original stainless-steel sports car, immortalized in film and popular culture, lives on in the resurrected automaker’s new Alpha5 model, so it does in Cambridge Audio’s Evo 150 DeLorean Edition integrated amplifier. The component reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of DeLorean’s DMC-12, unveiled as a prototype in 1976 and built from 1981 through 1982.

Founded in the UK by a group of musicians and music lovers in 1968, Cambridge Audio soon built a reputation for affordable, high-performance components that goes back to its first integrated stereo amplifier, the P40.

The new $3,199 Evo 150 DeLorean Edition is an all-in-one integrated amp and network player that delivers 150 wpc, and can drive two sets of loudspeakers, such as the acoustically matched Cambridge Audio Evo S ($799 per pair). This amp is based on the Evo 150, with a touch of extra design flair that recalls the brushed-stainless exterior and silver detailing that distinguishes the original DeLorean DMC-12 from every other car ever made.

The Evo 150 DeLorean Edition features interchangeable magnetic side panels that allow listeners to change its look faster than an automotive stylist might render a concept on a tablet. One of the panels emulates the black grille and logo of the DMC-12, while the other features brushed-metal panels and the modern logo from DeLorean’s forthcoming Alpha5.

The 6.8-inch LCD front panel and single dual-concentric rotary dial are as clean as design gets, and the retro-inspired dual meters look back to the glory days of jumping needles in VU meters. More practically, the large LCD panel shows off digital album artwork in full color. The Evo 150 is a full-function device that lets listeners tune in to internet radio or enjoy music-streaming services, and Bluetooth aptX HD enables hi-res playback to and from compatible devices.

The StreamMagic app delivers a user-friendly streaming experience, while the Evo 150’s multiroom capability makes it compatible with Google Home, Apple Airplay, and Roon systems.

Alternately, music lovers with collections of CDs or stored digital files will appreciate the high-quality ESS SABRE ES9018k2m Reference DAC, allowing a compact disc transport like Cambridge Audio’s EVO CD ($1,199) to run straight in. XLR balanced inputs allow pairing with high-quality analog equipment, and taking listeners “back to the future” is the Evo 150’s built-in MM phono stage, which lets vinyl collectors dedicated to the pleasures of the LP enjoy their favorite source material.
