Demian Maia Thought He Deserved Welterweight Title Shot Over Tyron Woodley

The UFC 201 main event was officially announced on Tuesday. Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will put his title on the line against third-ranked contender Tyron Woodley on July 30 in Atlanta.

No. 4-ranked Demian Maia felt he should have gotten the call to face Lawler for the belt.

Maia is riding a five-fight winning streak and is coming off a submission win over Matt Brown at UFC 198 on May 14. During the event's post-fight press conference, Mia stated his case to get a title shot before Woodley.

“I think that in this division, I have the longest consecutive victories. I think more than Woodley. I think he’s got two. I’ve got five,” said the Brazilian. “Mathematically, I think I’m the one the deserves to fight for the title.”

“I went down to the 170-pound division 10 fights ago, and I have eight victories. I lost two fights against very tough opponents. One of them was by split decision,” he said. “I want the chance to fight for the title.”

Maia will have to wait until after UFC 201 to get his crack at the welterweight crown, and that's no guarantee. The promotion will ultimate decided who gets the next shot at the 170-pound title.
