Demian Maia Wants Title Shot if He Defeats Matt Brown at UFC 198

Sixth-ranked welterweight Demian Maia wants a title shot if he gets past his UFC 198 opponent Matt Brown.

Maia is riding a four-fight winning streak and has won seven of his nine fights since moving to the 170-pound division in 2013. His two losses are by decision to top contender Rory MacDonald and Jake Shields, who is no longer in the organization.

“If I win this fight, it’s not a secret that I’ve been asking for a long time, since I’ve been in this division, I want to fight for the title. I’ve been here for quite some time,” said Maia during the recent UFC 198 press conference in Brazil.

“I’ve been in this for a long time. If I win this fight, I earned it. I earned the shot,” he said.

Maia’s argument to leapfrog Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson, who are both ranked in front of him, is his tenure in the UFC.

“I believe winning this fight, it will be my fifth consecutive win in this weight class, and my eighth victory in this weight class,” he said. “I have 16 victories in the UFC. I only hope to win this fight and fight for the belt.

No matter how unlikely his title aspirations are, Maia must first get past Brown.

“I want to go in there and do my best,” he said. “I have to win, and then fight for the title after.”
