Northern Irish footballer Ryan McBride has died at the age of 27.

The Derry City captain was reportedly found dead in his bedroom on Sunday. The cause of death is unknown.

In a short statement released via their official Twitter account, the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland paid its respects to McBride.

“We are shocked to hear this evening the passing of our member and Derry City captain Ryan McBride. Our thoughts are with his family.”

The Derry Journal report that crowds of supporters gathered outside his home at Bluebell Hill Gardens to pay their respects on Sunday night.

McBride made over 120 appearances for Derry City between 2011 and 2017.
