Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio questioned his players' attitude after their 2-1 defeat at Aldershot put their promotion party on ice.

The former West Ham striker, who returned from Italy for the game after the death of his mother, dropped Jay McEveley, Simon Ferry, Lee Holmes and Aden Flint from the side that beat Plymouth on Saturday and threatened to replace the entire starting line-up for the remainder of the season.

The Robins needed just a point to secure promotion but goals from Guy Madjo and Danny Hylton for the Shots ensured Di Canio will have to wait until Saturday's trip to Gillingham before a return to League One can be confirmed.

"We deserved to lose and deserved to lose by more," said Di Canio, whose side are nine points clear of fourth-placed Torquay with three games remaining.

"There is a group of players who have done something that is far from what I want to see, so I will make some very tough decisions.

"They maybe thought everything is done, to go out and have more drinks, for some it is maybe a holiday and they can cancel everything. Until the day I give them holiday, the people who are under contract with this club will have to behave off the field.

"I will happily let all the players who played have treble sessions and not go out on Saturday nights. I will be very tough. If we keep going this way we have to be careful."

Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth said: "I'm really happy with the performance and the result, they've had to earn it against a very good side, a side who I believe will go up as champions.

"We had some harsh words with my players when we drew at the weekend, I let them know my feelings and they responded with character.

"I still want more from them in certain parts, but man for man we were brilliant. For a club of our size and our finances we should be round the bottom of the league but we are sitting in the top half of the division and I'm proud of what we have achieved."
